Winnipeg police chase with stolen car ends in arrest of break and enter suspect
The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) arrested the suspect in a number of break and enters following a car chase with a stolen vehicle last week.
The incident began around 11:35 p.m. on Friday when officers saw a stolen 2013 Toyota Corolla being driven near Harbison Avenue West and Brazier Street. The car had been stolen from the 200 block of Watt Street on Dec. 8.
Officers called in additional units, including Air 1, which followed the stolen car into the Glenelm, Elmwood, Talbot-Grey and East Kildonan-Transcona areas.
According to the WPS, the suspect continued driving until he stopped at Werrell Crescent and Tu-Pelo Avenue where he got out of the car and ran. He was arrested in the first 100 block of Ravenhill Road.
Police noted that during the 25-minute chase, the suspect drove in a manner that was “dangerous to the general public.” No one was hurt and nothing was damaged.
The major crimes unit took over the investigation and linked the driver to a number of break and enter and theft incidents. This includes:
- A break and enter of an apartment leasing office in the 200 block of Peguis Street on Sept. 11 and 15 where documents, ID and property were stolen.
- The theft of a 2009 Honda Civic from a home in the 200 block of Victoria Avenue East on Oct. 31. The car was found on Nov. 3 in the first block of Henrietta Street.
- Breaking into the common areas of an apartment building in the 100 block of Roch Street on Nov. 21.
- The theft of tools from the mechanical room of an apartment building in the 800 block of Panet Road on Dec. 10. Police said the damages and stolen property are valued at $2,500.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested and charged with several offences. He is in custody.
