Winnipeggers can beat the heat at hydration stations, cooling centres as heat warnings continue

The city is reminding Winnipeggers there are places to cool off and stay hydrated, as much of southern Manitoba is under a heat warning this weekend.

There are eight hydration stations throughout Winnipeg where people can access clean drinking water, the city said in a Saturday news release. They can also cool off in leisure centres and libraries during regular operating hours.

Public pools and spray pads can also be used during operating hours.

Some community centres in the city are also acting as cooling spaces this summer.

The hydration stations can be found in the following locations:

  • 470 Selkirk Ave., near The Bell Tower.
  • The Broadway Neighbourhood Centre at 185 Young St.
  • The southwest corner of Stella Avenue on Main Street, near Mount Carmel Clinic.
  • The northeast corner of Princess Street and Henry Avenue, near Siloam Mission.
  • The southeast corner of Roslyn Road and Osborne Street.
  • 369 Furby St., near Agape Table.
  • The southeast corner of Maryland Street and Ellice Avenue, near the Spence Neighbourhood Association.
  • 190 Disraeli Freeway, near the N’Dinawemak — Our Relatives’ Place shelter.

On Friday, Environment Canada said humidex values reaching 38 are expected across southern Manitoba this weekend. The daytime high in Winnipeg is forecasted to be 30 C on Saturday and 32 C on Sunday.

The city is urging people to stay hydrated and in the shade, and to wear a hat and loose-fitting clothing during the heat. People should also call 911 if they or someone else is experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Winnipeggers should also check in with family members who may be vulnerable to the heat, keep babies and young children in the shade, and make sure children and pets are never left alone in closed vehicles or direct sunlight, the city says.
