Man charged after police say he fled officer in Brampton, ran red lights and nearly hit pedestrian

Police say a man who once led officers on a 1,000 kilometre chase ending in Etobicoke has been arrested in Brampton on 19 new charges.

The 29-year-old man from Mississauga was arrested on Sunday after allegedly fleeing an officer in a transport truck when the officer tried to stop him in Brampton, nearly hitting a pedestrian and speeding through multiple red lights.

After an “extensive investigation” the man was located at a local gas station. He was allegedly impaired by drugs at the time of his arrest, according to a Peel police news release on Monday.

The accused also breached multiple conditions of release and two driving prohibitions, police said.

According to the release, he had allegedly been operating transport trucks and trailers in the Greater Toronto Area and other provinces with fraudulent driving documents.

“Due to the severity of these offences, his disregard for his conditions of release, and his history of fleeing from police, he was denied bail and held in custody,” police said in the release.

The 19 charges include:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

  • Possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).

  • Possession of a controlled substance (heroin).

  • Possession of property obtained by crime.

  • Identity theft.

  • Four counts of operation while prohibited.

  • Two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

  • Five counts of failing to comply with a release order.

  • Flight from peace officer.

  • Failure to stop after an accident.

  • Obstruct police officer.

cis “proactively working to disrupt street racing activity or responding to the dangerous behaviour of prolific criminal driving offenders these officers are having an impact,” said Deputy Chief Marc Andrews in the release.
